Owen qualified from Belfast in 1986. He returned to Coleraine in 1988 after practising in Londonderry. He was awarded a Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1993, his Diploma of Membership of the Faculty of General Dental Practice from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1995 and his Membership of General Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1996.
After 12 years being involved with undergraduate training in the Restorative Department of the School of Clinical Dentistry, he moved to become a postgraduate dental tutor from 1999-2009 with NIMDTA. It was here that he pioneered small group learning in primary Dental Care. He has been the regional tutor for the Faculty of General Dental Practice, Royal College of Surgeons of England since 1998 and he currently lectures throughout UK and Ireland for companies such as 3M.
Owen is a member of the International Team of Implantology and is a member of the Product Research and Evaluation by Practitioners Panel at Birmingham University. This position enables him to be at the forefront of dental material research in a practice environment. Materials available include amalgam replacement white filling materials and metal free crowns and bridges.
He is the Clinical Director of the W7 referral polyclinic in Coleraine where he has an interest in all aspects of treatment with special emphasis in endodontics, implants and restorative dentistry. He takes referrals from practitioners throughout Ireland for routine, complex treatments and problem solving.
